Otherwise is free, and it stays free. No funny tricks. No selling your data. No nudging you toward products for profit. The benefit of an experiment is that we can build without ulterior motives.
Historically, the economics of software created a gap between what something cost to build and what users were charged to use it. Heavy overhead from engineering, operations, and support meant people paid $15 a month for tools that cost almost nothing to actually run.
That gap is closing. Otherwise is built on infrastructure that bills for actual consumption, not idle capacity. The result is a product where the honest price and the right price are the same thing: free.
The users who opt into live bank synchronization chip in a small amount to cover that specific connection. Those contributions also happen to sustain the infrastructure for everyone else. Otherwise didn't choose to be charitable. It's a product where offering it free is simply the most economically sound position to take.
Otherwise is forward-looking, not backward-looking. Most money apps look backwards (and there is some value there!). We do the other thing: you set up your income and expenses as simple rules, build what-if scenarios for the real decisions in front of you (take the job, buy the car, move, cut your hours), and watch your projected balance play out side by side over the next twelve months.
Otherwise answers the only question that actually matters in the moment: if I do this, am I going to be okay?
